$516m expansion for WA mine, the largest of its kind worldwide

Talison Lithium’s Greenbushes mine, already the largest hard rock lithium mine in the world, is set for a huge expansion. An increased demand for lithium, primarily to produce batteries for electric cars, has prompted the works. Lithium output from the mine is expected to increase to around 1.95 million tonnes per year, which is double the current production rate.
The project has recently been approved by the State Environmental Protection Authority (EPA). They are encouraging Talison to protect endangered wildlife in the area, including the Western Ringtail Possum and Baudin’s black cockatoos.
The mine is located approximately 250 kilometers south of Perth and 90 kilometers south east of Bunbury.
