Sydney light rail getting closer to a reality

Posted on 30 July 2019

There was quite a buzz around the Sydney CBD this morning with further tests taking place for the new light rail. Police have issued warnings for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists; advising that everyone needs to be more vigilant going forward. The trams are limited to 20kms per hour for travel within the CBD but are virtually silent, which has caused some near misses for distracted pedestrians crossing the roads.

CCTV footage from the test has captured cyclists and drivers going through amber and red lights and turning in front of the trams, while some pedestrians ignored the barriers in place for their protection and climbed over. Increased awareness is needed to ensure that the use of light rail is safe and effective for Sydney-siders once construction is complete.
